The “Open Graph” protocol is a free way to integrate your pages into this social fabric, allowing users to establish connections with your products, people, website, or even your organization itself. These “real-life objects” can then be shared among users, and will be included in Facebook’s search results and news.

In order to do this, there are two things that must be changed on your webpage.

  • Add metadata to your page describing the object, including a name, type, picture, and a link. This information is not visible on your page, but is used on Facebook’s pages when displaying the object.
  • Add a “Like” button or other Facebook plugin to your page.

Your organization doesn’t need to have a Facebook account, but if you do, you get a few extra features: you can see statistics about your page, and you can also push out updates to all users who “liked” the page in the past.
